Most container plants die from water, light, or root space, not from disease. Check in this order: push a finger an inch into the mix, look at the drainage hole, then slide the plant out and look at the roots. White and firm means the problem is elsewhere. Brown and mushy means rot. Then count the hours of direct sun that spot really gets. Under four is a light shortage no fertilizer will fix.
Diagnose in sixty seconds
Run these six checks in this exact order before you change anything. The order matters more than the checks, because water problems mimic almost every other problem on the list. A plant short of water and a plant drowning in it look identical from three feet away: both wilt, both drop leaves, both yellow. If you skip step one you will spend a week treating a nutrient deficiency that was actually a soggy pot.
- Push a finger into the mix to the first knuckle. Dry to an inch down, or wet at the surface? Note it before you touch anything else.
- Look at the drainage holes and the saucer. Are the holes open, or blocked by a root mat or a flat patio slab? Is the saucer standing full?
- Slide the plant out and look at the roots. White and firm is healthy. Brown, soft and sour-smelling is rot. A dense mat circling the pot wall is root bound.
- Count the hours of direct sun that spot actually gets. Not what the listing said. Watch it for a day, or check it at 9am, noon, and 4pm.
- Turn a leaf over and look at the underside. Aphids, mites and whitefly all live there, not on the top surface where you have been looking.
- Ask when it was last fed. A container that has been in the same mix for two months with no feed has run out of nitrogen, whatever else is also true.
Finger, drain, roots, sun, leaf underside, last feed. Six checks, one minute. Most sick containers are diagnosed by step three, and almost none need a diagnosis more exotic than step six.
Symptom, cause, fix
Find the line that matches what you are looking at. The likeliest cause is listed first because in containers it usually is the likeliest, not because other causes are impossible. Work the fix in the third column today, then set up the prevention in the fourth so it does not come back.

If two rows both fit, treat the water cause first and wait three days before doing anything else.
Water problems come first, because they cause the rest
Watering is behind more container deaths than every pest and disease combined, and it kills in both directions. A pot is a closed system with a fixed volume of mix, and unlike a garden bed there is nowhere for excess water to go and no deep reservoir to draw from when it runs dry. Both failures show up as a wilting plant, which is why step one of the diagnosis is a finger in the mix rather than a watering can.
Root rot, and whether the rescue is worth attempting
Root rot happens when the mix stays saturated, air is driven out of the pore spaces, and the roots suffocate and decay. The plant then wilts because it has no working roots, and the natural response, more water, kills it faster. To attempt a rescue: slide the plant out, wash the mix off the root ball so you can see what you are working with, and cut away every brown, soft or foul-smelling root with clean scissors. Repot into fresh mix in a pot only slightly bigger than the roots that survived, since a large pot holds water a reduced root system cannot use. Give it no water for a day or two, and no feed at all until you see new growth. If nothing white and firm is left, stop there.
Chronic underwatering and mix that repels water
The other failure is slower and less dramatic. Peat-based mixes that dry out completely become hydrophobic: water hits the surface, runs down the gap between the mix and the pot wall, and pours out of the drainage hole in seconds. It looks like you watered. Nothing reached the roots. The fix is bottom watering, 1 to 2 inches of water in a tray with the pot sitting in it for 10 to 20 minutes, then discard what is left. Repeat until the mix takes water from the top again.
And then there is the saucer left standing full, which is the single most common way a well-meaning gardener drowns a plant. A saucer is there to catch overflow, not to store it. Do not water a wilting plant before you check whether the mix is already wet. Wilting in wet mix means rotted roots, and adding water makes it worse. Finger in first, watering can second. Every time.
Light problems
A plant in too little light stretches, pales, and refuses to flower, and nothing you add to the pot will change that. Leggy growth, long bare gaps between leaves, and stems that lean hard toward the brightest side are all the same signal: the plant is spending its energy searching instead of growing. On a fruiting crop the tell is subtler. The plant looks healthy, stays green, produces plenty of leaves, and simply never sets fruit, because flowering and fruiting cost more energy than the light budget covers.
Use the honest thresholds. Full sun means 6 or more hours of direct sun, part sun 4 to 6, and shade under 3. Four hours of sun will never grow a full-size tomato. It will grow lettuce, mint, chives, parsley and chard perfectly well. Choose the crop to match the light you have, rather than fighting the light you were given, and check the list in best vegetables and herbs to grow in containers before you buy another plant for that corner.
The opposite failure is scorch. A plant raised indoors or bought from a shaded nursery bench has thin leaves with no protective conditioning, and one full day in direct summer sun bleaches them white or leaves dry brown patches in the middle of the leaf. Those leaves do not recover. Harden off instead: put the plant out for an hour of direct sun on the first day and add an hour a day for a week to ten days. It is dull, it works, and it costs nothing.
Soil and feeding problems
A container runs out of nutrients on a predictable schedule, usually around 6 to 8 weeks after planting, and by midsummer an unfed pot is living on nothing. Most bagged potting mixes carry a starter charge of fertilizer that lasts about that long. After that, every watering flushes a little more out of the drainage hole. The classic sign is even yellowing that starts on the oldest, lowest leaves while the new growth at the top stays green, because the plant is moving nitrogen from old tissue to new.
Start liquid feed at ½ tbsp per gallon and move to 1 tbsp per gallon once growth is strong, every 10 to 14 days. Wait about a week after transplanting before the first feed, so the roots settle first. Over-feeding has its own signature: dark, almost blue-green leaves that curl downward, brittle growth, and a white crust forming on the mix surface. Under-feeding is the pale, small-leaved, slow version of the same plant.
Salt build-up is the accumulated residue of fertilizer and hard water. It shows as a white crust on the surface or a ring around the rim, and it burns leaf edges brown. Flush it: take the pot somewhere it can drain freely and run about three times the pot's volume of water slowly through it until what comes out is clear. Do that once or twice a season on heavily fed pots.
Not everything wants to be fed. Rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage and lavender come from lean, sharp-draining ground and produce more oil, and more flavour, when they are slightly hungry. Feed them like a tomato and you get soft, floppy, bland growth that rots at the first wet spell. The base recipe that suits nearly everything else is 2 parts potting mix to 1 part compost to 1 part perlite, and the reasoning behind it is in the best soil for container gardening.
Root-bound and outgrown pots
A root-bound plant stops growing, dries out within a day of watering, and shows roots pushing out of the drainage holes. Water runs straight through because there is more root than mix left in the pot, and no mix means no water-holding capacity and no nutrients. The plant is not sick. It has simply run out of house.
To check, tip the pot on its side and slide the plant out with a hand supporting the stem. A healthy root ball holds together with visible mix between the roots. A root-bound one comes out as a solid mat with roots circling the wall in tight spirals, sometimes matted flat across the bottom. Those circling roots will keep circling after repotting unless you interrupt them, so tease the outer inch loose with your fingers, or slice about half an inch deep down the sides in three or four places with a clean knife.
Then choose. To let the plant get bigger, pot up one or two sizes into fresh mix. To hold it at its current size, root-prune instead: cut an inch off the bottom and sides of the root ball, trim a proportionate amount of top growth, and return it to the same pot with fresh mix around the outside. The short version: a pot at least one third the height of the mature plant, 5 gallons minimum for a tomato and 10 better, 6 to 8 inches deep for herbs and greens.
Pests you will actually meet in containers
Six pests account for nearly all container trouble, and almost every one of them arrives because the plant is already stressed. A plant with the right light, steady water and enough root space shrugs off pressure that flattens a struggling one. So before you spray anything, fix the cultural cause. Then use the least drastic treatment that works, and give it three days before escalating.

Spray soap in the evening or early morning, never on leaves in direct sun, and never on a plant that is already wilting.
Weather events that kill a container overnight
A container has none of the thermal buffer that ground soil gives, which is why weather that a garden bed absorbs can kill a pot in a single day. Ground soil a foot down barely moves in temperature over an afternoon. A 3-gallon pot on a south-facing balcony can swing 30°F, and the root ball cooks against the pot wall on the sunny side. Fabric bags and thin plastic are the worst offenders; thick terracotta and glazed ceramic buffer better.
- Heat spike. Water deeply the morning before, group pots together so they shade each other, and shift the smallest ones into afternoon shade for the day. Reflective walls and light-coloured paving double the heat load.
- Wind. Wind pulls moisture out of leaves faster than roots can replace it, which is why a well-watered plant still crisps at the edges on a gusty day. Cluster pots, add a screen on the windward side, and weight or lash anything tall before a storm.
- Early frost. Tender crops turn black overnight. Move pots indoors or against a warm house wall, or cover with fabric raised off the foliage. A pot freezes solid at temperatures the ground merely chills.
- Winter wet. A blocked drainage hole in a cold, wet month rots roots invisibly and cracks the pot when the water freezes. Clear the hole, lift the pot onto feet, and tip it out of the rain shadow if it will not be planted.
Bolting, and what it actually means
Bolting is a plant switching from leaf production to flowering and seed setting, triggered by heat and day length, and it is not something you did wrong. The plant is doing exactly what it evolved to do at the end of its cool season. Lettuce, spinach, cilantro, bok choy, mustard, arugula and radishes all bolt, and once the flower stalk shoots up the leaves turn bitter and tough, usually within a few days.
Harvest whatever is still usable the moment you see a central stalk rising. Cilantro that has bolted goes on to make coriander seed, which is worth keeping. Bolted lettuce is not worth saving. You can delay bolting by giving afternoon shade through the hottest part of the day, keeping the mix evenly moist rather than letting it swing dry, and choosing varieties described as slow-bolting or heat-tolerant.
The timing of the sowing matters more than any of that. A spring sowing runs into rising heat and lengthening days, so it has a short window before it bolts. The same seed sown in late summer grows into shortening days and falling temperatures, which is the direction these crops like, and it will often crop for twice as long. If you keep losing greens in June, sow them in August instead.
When to stop trying
Some plants are finished, and nursing them costs you a growing slot you could be using. A seedling that has collapsed at the soil line will not stand back up, because the stem tissue that held it is gone. An annual at the end of its natural life, a bolted lettuce, a bean plant that has stopped setting pods, a basil that has flowered and gone woody, is not sick. It is done. And a plant with no white root left after you have cut away the rot has no engine to regrow from, whatever the top growth still looks like.
Replant the pot instead. It is faster, cheaper, and more likely to give you something to eat. One caveat: if the plant died of rot, do not reuse that mix. Empty it out, wash the pot, and refill with fresh mix, since the pathogens and the compaction that caused the rot are both still in there. Mix from a pot that simply finished its season can be revived with a third fresh compost and a handful of perlite. The three failures behind most container losses
Watering by schedule instead of by test, a pot too small for the crop, and a plant put somewhere the light does not exist. That is the list. Nearly everything in the symptom table traces back to one of those three, and the pests trace back to the stress the three of them cause.
Watering on a schedule is wrong because a pot's water use changes daily with temperature, wind and plant size. The same tomato that needs a splash in May needs two full waterings a day in August. Test with a finger instead. A pot too small dries out faster than you can keep up with, runs out of nutrients early, and root binds by midseason, and no amount of attention makes a 1-gallon pot grow a full tomato. And light is the one input you cannot buy your way around outdoors: match the crop to the hours you have.
