Use a soilless potting mix, never garden soil, which compacts into a dense block in a pot and suffocates roots. The house recipe is 2 parts potting mix, 1 part compost, 1 part perlite. A 12 inch pot takes about 10 dry quarts; a 1 cubic foot bag holds about 25. Start liquid feeding at half a tablespoon per gallon once the starter charge runs out, around six weeks in.
Why garden soil fails in a pot
Garden soil fails in a pot because it has nowhere to drain. In the ground, soil sits on top of more soil, and water keeps moving down through it for feet at a time. Air follows the water back into the gaps. Inside a container, that column stops at a plastic wall and a few small holes, and the physics change completely.
What happens next takes about three weeks. The fine clay and silt particles that make garden soil productive outdoors settle into every gap. Watering packs them tighter each time. The pockets of air that roots breathe through collapse, and the mix turns into a dense brick that holds a wet layer at the bottom and cracks away from the wall at the top. The plant is being watered correctly and is still drowning.
It fails slowly, which is why people blame the plant. Growth stalls, lower leaves yellow, the whole thing sulks through summer and never recovers. Nothing looks acutely wrong on any single day. Weight is the second problem. Wet garden soil is roughly twice the weight of wet potting mix, which matters a great deal on a balcony and matters to your back everywhere else. The third problem is what comes along with it: weed seed, slug eggs, fungus gnat larvae, and the soil-borne pathogens that cause wilt and root rot. A bed can absorb those. A sealed pot cannot.
Digging soil from the yard to fill pots because the bagged stuff costs $15 to $40. It is the single most common reason a first container fails, and the failure arrives too slowly to connect to the cause. If budget is the constraint, buy one bag of potting mix and stretch it with compost and perlite rather than filling with soil.
What do the bags actually mean?
The names on garden center bags describe intent, not contents, and only two of them belong in a container on their own. The rest are amendments, ground cover, or specialist products that will let you down if you fill a pot with them. Read the ingredient list on the back, because "potting soil" and "potting mix" are used interchangeably by many brands and tell you almost nothing by themselves.

If the ingredient list names coir, peat, bark and perlite, it will work in a pot. If it names topsoil or sand first, it will not.
What is a good container mix made of?
Every good container mix does three jobs: it holds the plant up, it keeps air in the pot, and it feeds. Those three roles map to three groups of ingredients, and once you can see the roles you can read any bag or build any recipe. A mix that is heavy on one role and light on another is the origin of most container soil problems.

The perlite and vermiculite distinction is the one worth internalizing. Both open a mix up, but perlite sheds water and vermiculite holds it. Lean on perlite whenever the pot is large, the plant hates wet feet, or you tend to overwater. Lean on vermiculite in seed trays, in small pots that dry out in a day, and anywhere you cannot water reliably. Most mixes want a little of each.
Three mixes you can make yourself
Three recipes cover almost everything a container gardener does. Buy the components in bulk once and you will mix for less than the cost of premium bagged product, with better control over drainage. Measure by scoop, not by weight, and pick one scoop for the whole batch so the ratios hold.
2 parts potting mix : 1 part compost : 1 part perlite. That single ratio will grow tomatoes, peppers, greens, beans and most flowers in almost any pot. Everything below is an adjustment to it.
1. General container mix
Combine 2 parts bagged potting mix, 1 part finished compost and 1 part perlite in a bucket or wheelbarrow. Crumble any compressed clods with your hands before you turn it, because a dense lump of compost survives intact into the pot and stays waterlogged all season. Fold the pile over on itself until the white perlite is scattered evenly with no streaks of pure compost, then wet it gradually and fill to about an inch below the rim. Settle it by tapping the pot on the ground rather than pressing with your hands, which undoes the air space you just built.
2. Seed-starting mix
Seedlings want a fine, low-nutrient, water-retentive mix: 60 percent coco coir, 30 percent vermiculite, 10 percent worm castings. A convenient mini batch is one 8 quart coco coir brick, 4 quarts of vermiculite and 1.25 quarts of worm castings. Break the brick into a bucket with about 4.5 quarts of warm water and leave it 2 to 10 minutes to expand, then fluff it apart with your hands before adding the other two.
Target the moisture of a wrung-out sponge. A squeezed handful should hold its shape and release a drop or two, never a stream. Too wet and the seeds sit in stagnant mix and damp off; too dry and germination stalls. This mix has deliberately little food in it, which is why seedlings need moving on before they get hungry.
3. Up-potting mix
When a seedling outgrows its plug, step it into 2 parts potting soil to 1 part seed-starting mix, plus a scoop of perlite. The seed-starting component keeps the texture fine enough for young roots to push through, the potting soil brings the nutrition they now need, and the perlite keeps the whole thing breathing in a deeper pot. Two adjustments worth making
- Thirsty crops in small pots. Tomatoes, cucumbers and greens in anything under 10 inches will dry out daily in summer. Swap some perlite for vermiculite, or push the compost share toward a third, to buy yourself several hours.
- Mediterranean herbs. Rosemary, lavender, thyme, oregano and sage evolved on thin rocky slopes and rot in a rich, wet mix. Push perlite or coarse grit to a third of the volume and cut the compost back. Lean soil produces more aromatic oil, not less.
How much soil do you need?
A 12 inch pot takes about 10 dry quarts, and a standard 1 cubic foot bag holds roughly 25 dry quarts. Bagged mix is sold by dry quarts or cubic feet, never by weight, and the numbers are less intuitive than they look: a 16 inch pot holds nearly four times what a 10 inch pot does, because volume climbs with the cube of the diameter.

Buy about 10 percent more than the arithmetic says. Fresh mix settles by an inch or so in the first few weeks and wants a top-up.
Weight follows volume, and on a balcony that is a structural question rather than a convenience one. Wet potting mix runs roughly 8 to 10 lb per gallon of container volume, and residential balconies are commonly rated around 40 lb per square foot. A single 24 inch pot filled and watered can approach 150 lb before you add the plant. Spread large pots along the wall rather than clustering them at the railing.
Why the pot runs out of food
A container runs out of nutrients around four to eight weeks after planting, no matter how good the mix was. Two things drain it. There is no wider soil ecosystem underneath resupplying nutrients as they are used, and every time you water until it runs from the drainage holes, some of what is left dissolves and leaves with it. That leaching is the price of watering correctly, and it is worth paying.
Mix a slow-release granular feed into the top few inches at planting, following the rate on the label rather than your instincts. Then start a liquid feed once the granules are spent. Begin at half a tablespoon per gallon of water while the plant is small, and move to 1 tablespoon per gallon once growth is strong and the plant is putting on real size. Wait about a week after transplanting before the first feed, so damaged roots can heal before they are asked to take up salts.
The plant will tell you when the rate is wrong. Too much feed shows as very dark green leaves that curl downward, brittle new growth, and often a white crust on the surface. Too little shows as pale, evenly yellowing older leaves and growth that simply stops. Correct in small steps, not by doubling.
Match the rate to the crop. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash and anything producing continuous fruit are heavy feeders and want a liquid feed every two weeks through the season. Leafy greens want steady nitrogen but less of everything else. Rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage and lavender want almost nothing; feed them at half rate a couple of times a season and their flavour will be stronger for it.
Can you reuse last season's mix?
Yes, in most cases, and doing so is the largest saving available to a container gardener. If last season's plant was healthy to the end, the mix is worth reviving. What has degraded is not the nutrition, which you can replace, but the structure: the bark and coir have broken down into finer particles and the air space has closed up.
Tip the pot out onto a tarp. Pull the old root ball apart with your hands and discard the roots, along with any stones or old fertilizer granules. Break up the compacted layers until the whole pile crumbles evenly. Then blend in about one third fresh potting mix, two or three handfuls of compost, and a scoop of perlite to restore the aeration you lost. That combination gets you back to something close to a new mix.
Retire it entirely in two situations. The first is disease: if a plant died of root rot, wilt or a stem collapse at the soil line, the pathogen is still in there and will take the next plant too. The second is texture: if the old mix has gone grey and slick and will not crumble between your fingers, it has lost its structure permanently and no amount of perlite will bring it back. Spread retired mix on an ornamental bed rather than binning it, and start the pot fresh.
Should you mulch a container?
Yes, and half an inch is enough. A thin layer of fine bark, leaf mold or clean straw over the surface slows evaporation noticeably, which in high summer can be the difference between watering once a day and once every two. It keeps light off the surface so algae cannot establish, and it stops hard watering from splashing mix up onto the lower leaves, which is how several fungal problems reach a plant in the first place.
Keep it pulled back an inch from the stem. Mulch held against a stem keeps that one spot permanently damp and invites rot at exactly the point the plant can least afford it. Skip mulch on seed trays and very small pots, where it hides the surface you need to see and feel. Mulch changes how fast a pot dries, so recalibrate using the method in how often to water container plants rather than keeping your old schedule.
Fixing common soil problems
Most container soil problems are visible on the surface, and most have a fix that takes ten minutes. The table below covers what you are likely to see. If the plant itself is the thing in trouble rather than the mix, work through the symptom-by-symptom diagnosis instead.
