Start with one pot, not six. Spend one clear day counting direct sun at 8am, noon, and 4pm, then match a plant to it: basil or a cherry tomato at 6+ hours, lettuce or chard at 4 to 6, mint under 3. Use a pot with drainage holes, fill it with 2 parts potting mix, 1 compost, 1 perlite, and water when the top inch dries. Roughly $30 to $60, five minutes a week.
Most people who want to garden never start, because they picture a garden. Beds, a hose reel, a whole Saturday. The picture is too large to begin, so nothing begins. The fix is to shrink the first commitment until it fits in one afternoon: one pot, one plant, one spot you already walk past every day.
A first pot costs about $30 to $60 all in, counting the pot, the mix, the compost, the perlite and the plant. Once it is planted it takes roughly five minutes a week. That is the entire ask. What follows is the order to do it in, because sequence matters more than enthusiasm here. Your light decides your plant. Your plant decides your pot. Your pot decides how often you water.
Why start with one pot?
Because the failure mode of a first garden is scale, not skill. Almost nobody quits container gardening because they could not learn to settle a seedling into a pot. They quit because they bought six pots in one afternoon, and six pots in high summer come due for water at six slightly different times, and one weekend away turns into six dead plants sitting on a balcony as evidence.
One pot is a different kind of object. It is small enough to notice, cheap enough to lose, and quick enough to water that you never have to negotiate with yourself about doing it. What you are building in the first month is not a garden. It is the habit of checking soil with a finger. That habit is the actual skill. Feeding, pruning, repotting and succession are technique layered on top, and technique is easy to pick up as long as the plant is still alive to practise on.
There is a second reason. One pot teaches you your own space: that the west end of the railing bakes from two o'clock, that the corner by the wall stays damp for two days after rain, that anything under the eave never gets rain at all. None of that is on the plant tag. You get it by watching one pot for a month, and it is what makes the next five work.
Step 1: Find your light before you buy anything
Measure your light first, on one clear day, before you spend a dollar. Sunlight is the only constraint you cannot buy your way around. You can improve poor soil, add water, block wind, and lighten a heavy pot. You cannot add three hours of sun to a north-facing balcony, and every plant choice downstream depends on the number you get here.
Pick a day without cloud and check the exact spot the pot will stand three times: 8am, noon, and 4pm. At each check, write down one of three things — direct sun, dappled light, or full shade. Three readings is enough, because sun across a small space moves in a predictable arc. Two directs and one shade is a part-sun spot. Three directs is full sun. One direct or none is shade, whatever it looks like to your eye.
- Full sun: 6 or more hours of direct light. Fruiting crops live here.
- Part sun: 4 to 6 hours. Leaves and roots, not fruit.
- Shade: under 3 hours. A short list, and no fruit at all.
One distinction does most of the damage: bright is not direct. A north-facing balcony under open sky can feel dazzling at noon and still deliver zero hours of direct sun, because the light is bounced rather than aimed. The test is a shadow. Sharp-edged means direct sun. Soft and grey means bright shade, and a tomato planted there grows eighteen inches of pale stem and sets nothing. Step 2: Pick a plant that matches the light you actually have
Pick the plant from the light you measured, not the light you wanted. This is the step where most first gardens are decided, and it takes about a minute if you are honest about the number from Step 1. The table below is a starter list: every one of these is forgiving, none needs staking or special handling in its first month, and each will produce something you can eat.

Time to first harvest is measured from planting a nursery seedling; add two to three weeks if you start from seed.
If your count came in under three hours, take the shade row seriously. A shade balcony should not attempt tomatoes: it will grow twelve inches of stem for every leaf and set two fruit that never colour. The honest shade list is mint, chives with slower regrowth, and salad greens that come out thin but are still good in a sandwich. A pot of mint you actually use beats a tomato skeleton in a corner.
Step 3: Choose the pot
Choose for drainage first, size second, material third. A pot with no hole in the bottom is a bucket. Water collects underneath, fills every air space in the mix, and the roots drown from the bottom up while the top looks healthy for about a week. Gravel in the base does not solve this; it lifts the waterlogged layer higher. If you love a pot that has no hole, drill one, or grow in a plain nursery pot and slip it inside as a sleeve.
Choose a pot at least one third the height of the mature plant. A basil that finishes at 18 inches wants 6 inches of pot; a cherry tomato at 4 feet wants a container around 16 inches deep, which is roughly 10 gallons.

Weight is the constraint people meet last and regret first. Wet potting mix runs about 8 to 10 pounds per gallon, so a 10-gallon tomato pot lands between 80 and 100 pounds once watered, before the pot itself. Residential balconies are commonly rated around 40 pounds per square foot. One big pot is fine anywhere; a row of glazed ceramic along a railing is worth checking your building rules over. Step 4: Fill it correctly
Fill the pot with a container mix, never with soil from the ground. This step quietly decides whether the plant thrives or merely survives, and it is the one beginners most often economise on. Garden soil is engineered by worms and roots for a bed. Lift it into a pot, cut it off from that biology, and within weeks it compacts into a dense block: water sits at the bottom, runs down the pot walls at the edges, and the roots in the middle get neither air nor moisture.
Digging soil out of the yard to save $15 on a bag of potting mix. It compacts, drowns roots, and brings weed seed, fungus gnats and disease along with it. The mix is the cheapest part of the pot to get right and the most expensive to get wrong.
Use 2 parts potting mix, 1 part compost, 1 part perlite. The potting mix gives structure, the compost gives slow nutrition and water-holding, the perlite keeps air in the mix so roots can breathe after a heavy watering. Measure with any container you like — a yogurt tub, a bucket, a scoop — as long as you use the same one for all three, and blend it on a tarp or in a tote rather than in the pot.
One 1-cubic-foot bag of potting mix fills roughly a 7-gallon pot, so a 5-gallon container takes about two thirds of a bag once you allow for compost and perlite. Fill to an inch below the rim. Step 5: Plant it
Planting takes about ten minutes and has five steps that matter. Do them in order, in the evening or on an overcast morning if you can, so the plant is not fighting full sun in its first hours.
- Loosen the roots. Slide the plant out of its nursery pot and rub the outside of the root ball with your thumbs until the circling roots break free. Left as a tight disc, it keeps growing in a circle and never reaches the new mix.
- Set it at the original depth. The line where stem meets soil in the nursery pot should sit at the same height in the new one. Burying the stem rots most plants. Tomatoes are the exception: they grow roots from buried stem, so set a leggy tomato two to four inches deeper and strip the leaves below the soil line.
- Firm lightly. Fill around the root ball and press with fingertips, not fists. You want contact with the roots and no air pockets, but compacting undoes the perlite you just paid for.
- Water until it runs out the bottom. Not a splash. Keep pouring until water comes through the drainage holes, which tells you the whole column of mix is wet rather than just the top two inches. Empty the saucer after twenty minutes.
- Label it. Crop and planting date, on a stick or a strip of tape on the rim. In six weeks you will want to know exactly how long it has been in, and you will not remember.
Step 6: Build the watering habit before you need it
Start the habit on day one, while the plant is small and does not need much, because a habit built under no pressure survives the first hot week. The method is a finger, not a schedule. Push your index finger into the mix to the first knuckle, about an inch down. Dry means water now. Damp means come back tomorrow. No calendar tells you as much, because a pot in an 80°F wind dries three times faster than the same pot in still air.
Water in the morning. The plant then has the whole day to use what you gave it, the leaves dry before nightfall, and you lose less to evaporation than you would at midday. Water deeply, until it runs from the holes, then stop; frequent shallow watering trains roots to stay near the surface where they cook. Most vegetables want the top inch to dry between waterings, so let the pot tell you when.
Then attach the check to something you already do. The pot gets looked at while the coffee brews, on the way back from the dog, or as you put keys down after a commute. Habits survive by attachment, not intention: a pot on a route you already walk gets watered, and a pot around a corner does not. What do the first thirty days look like?
Mostly they look like very little happening, followed by everything happening at once. That pause is normal and it is where beginners intervene unnecessarily — more water, more fertiliser, a move to a different spot — and cause the problem they were trying to prevent. Here is what is expected and what is genuinely wrong.

Two things about feeding. Wait about a week after planting before the first liquid feed: a fresh root ball takes up little, and unused fertiliser salts build up fast in a few gallons of mix. And start weak, at ½ tbsp per gallon, moving to 1 tbsp per gallon only once the plant is visibly growing. Overfeeding a seedling looks exactly like a watering problem, which is why it goes undiagnosed.
When it works, add the second pot
Add the second pot when the first has gone a full month without you thinking hard about it. That is the real signal — not the harvest, but the moment watering stops being a decision. Two pots is not twice the work, because the check is one trip. Work scales with the number of visits, not the number of pots, so keep them together.
The best second pot is often the first pot again. When the lettuce bolts or the beans finish, pull the spent plant, work two inches of fresh compost into the top, and replant the same container the same week. Sown in intervals, one pot produces continuously instead of all at once: roughly every 7 days for baby greens, lettuce, radishes and spinach; 10 days for head lettuce, bok choy, peas and bush beans; 14 days for beets and turnips; 21 days for carrots, cucumbers and bunching onions; 30 days for summer squash and chard. Set a reminder, sow a small batch, and you never have a gap or a glut.
Grow the second pot in a different light zone if you have one, so you are learning the space rather than repeating a success. Choose the crop for what you would otherwise buy: herbs and salad pay for themselves in weeks, while one pot of potatoes is a fun experiment and a poor trade.
