There is no fixed schedule. Push a finger one inch (2.5 cm) into the mix; if it is dry at that depth, water until it runs from the drainage holes. In practice that means every 2 to 4 days for a 3 to 5 gallon pot in mild weather, daily in summer heat, and twice a day for small pots above 95°F (35°C).
Why there is no fixed watering schedule
Because six things set the interval, and none of them is the calendar. A schedule works in the ground, where deep roots buffer a few dry days. A container has no buffer. Whatever is in the pot is all the water the plant has, and how fast that runs out changes week to week.
The six variables, in rough order of how much they matter:
- Pot size. A 1 gallon pot holds a few days of water in spring and a few hours in a heatwave. A 15 gallon pot in the same spot can go a week. Volume is the biggest lever you have.
- Pot material. Unglazed terracotta dries roughly twice as fast as glazed ceramic or plastic. Fabric grow bags dry fastest of all, because they lose water through every surface, not just the top.
- Sun and wind. Six hours of direct sun roughly doubles demand against a part-sun spot. Wind is the one people forget: a breezy balcony corner dries a pot faster than still air ten degrees hotter.
- The plant and its stage. A seedling drinks almost nothing. The same plant, root-bound and fruiting, drinks several times what it did in spring. Big soft leaves lose more than small waxy ones.
- The mix. A coir or peat mix with perlite holds moisture and still drains. Garden soil in a pot compacts and either stays sodden or sets hard, so the mix in the pot moves the interval more than people expect.
- The season. Growth and evaporation both track temperature and day length. The same pot can need water four times as often in midsummer as in late fall.
Stack those together and the honest range is wide. One basil plant in a 2 gallon pot might need water every three days in a mild spring, every day by midsummer, and twice a day in a windy heatwave. All three are correct. That is why the answer to "how often" is a test, not a number.
The two tests that replace a schedule
Two checks tell you everything, and both take seconds. The finger test is the primary; the weight test is the fast scan when you have twelve pots and two minutes.
The finger test. Push a finger into the mix to the first knuckle, about one inch (2.5 cm). If it comes out dry and clean, water. If mix clings to your skin or feels cool and damp, wait. For pots over 10 gallons go two knuckles, roughly two inches, because the top of a large pot dries long before the root zone does.
The weight test. Lift the pot, or tilt it on one edge if it is too heavy. A saturated pot is startlingly heavy; a dry one feels hollow. Do it deliberately right after you water, then again three days later, and that pot is calibrated for the season. From then on one tilt tells you what a finger would. It is the only method that scales past about six containers.
Finger in to the first knuckle. Dry at one inch means water; damp at one inch means wait. That single check outperforms every schedule anyone will ever give you, and it takes two seconds per pot.
Two appearances lie to you regularly. A surface that looks bone dry often sits on mix still damp an inch down, because the top crust bakes pale within an hour of sun. And a surface that looks damp after a light shower is usually dry underneath, since a passing rain wets half an inch and the leaf canopy sheds the rest over the rim. Never water on what the surface looks like.
A starting baseline, if you want a number
Here is a starting point, on the strict condition that you correct it with the finger test. Use it for the first two weeks with a new pot, then trust the finger and throw the table away.

Halve the interval for terracotta and for windy exposed spots. Roughly double it for part shade, glazed pots, or plants still under 6 inches tall.
Notice what the table is really saying: pot size buys you time. Moving a tomato from a 5 gallon pot to a 10 gallon one is often the difference between watering twice a day in high summer and watering once. How to water properly
Water deeply and slowly, at the base of the plant, until water runs freely from the drainage holes. That runoff is the signal that the entire root ball is wet, not just the top third. It is also doing a second job: carrying out the fertilizer salts and mineral residue that build up in a closed container every time you feed. A pot that never drains from the bottom accumulates those salts until the leaf edges start to burn.
A quick splash over the surface is worse than not watering. It wets the top inch, the roots follow the moisture upward, and you end up with a shallow root system that wilts the moment you miss a day. Deep watering trains roots downward, where the mix stays cooler and damper for longer.
Pour slowly enough that the water soaks in rather than channeling down the gap between mix and pot wall. In a large pot, move the can around the surface rather than dumping it in one spot. Then empty the saucer within an hour. A saucer left full turns the bottom two inches of the pot into a swamp, and that is where the roots you care about live.
Two habits kill more container plants than any pest. Leaving pots standing in a full saucer, which suffocates the root zone from below. And watering a wilted plant at 2pm without checking the mix first, which adds water to a pot that already has plenty and turns an afternoon slump into root rot.
If water runs straight through and out the bottom in seconds, the mix is not wet, it is hydrophobic. Dried-out peat and coir repel water, so it finds the gap along the pot wall and escapes without touching the root ball. Two fixes work. Stand the whole pot in a tub or sink with a few inches of water for 20 to 30 minutes until the surface darkens, which is the reliable option for a pot you have badly neglected. Or water in three small passes a few minutes apart, letting each one soften the surface for the next. Adding a small handful of compost to the top and mulching afterward keeps it from happening again.
Top watering or bottom watering?
Use both, for different jobs. Top watering is your default because it flushes salts and wets the whole profile. Bottom watering is the better tool for seedlings, for plants that hate wet foliage, and for any pot with a gnat or algae problem.
To bottom water: set the pot in a tray or basin with 1 to 2 inches of water, leave it 10 to 20 minutes, and lift it out when the surface of the mix is just slightly damp to the touch. Discard whatever water is left rather than leaving the pot sitting in it. The mix wicks up exactly what it can hold and no more.
Three things make it worth the extra step. Foliage stays dry, which matters for tomatoes, squash, basil and anything else prone to leaf spot and mildew. Roots grow downward toward the water rather than clustering at the surface. And the top of the mix stays dry, which starves the surface algae, damping-off fungus and fungus gnat larvae that all need constant surface moisture to get going.
The catch is salts. Bottom watering only ever moves water and dissolved minerals upward, so nothing gets flushed out and residue concentrates near the surface where it can burn young roots. If bottom watering is your normal routine, top water heavily every three or four weeks until it runs out the bottom, and let the pot drain fully.
What time of day should you water?
Morning, before the heat arrives. Water in the first few hours of daylight and the plant enters the hottest part of the day already loaded, which is exactly when it needs the supply. Foliage that gets splashed dries within the hour. And evaporation losses are at their lowest, so more of what you pour actually reaches the roots instead of leaving as vapor off warm mix.
Evening is the acceptable second choice, and in hot dry climates where nights stay warm it is genuinely fine. Where nights turn cool and damp, evening watering leaves foliage and the surface of the mix wet for ten or twelve hours, which is how mildew and stem rot get their opening. If you can only water in the evening, water at the base and keep the leaves dry.
Midday is the worst use of the water you have. A large share evaporates off hot mix and hot leaves before it does any work, and on a small balcony you are usually hauling that water by hand. That said, a genuinely dry pot at noon in a heatwave should be watered at noon. The rule bends for an emergency.
Which brings up the most common misreading in container gardening. A plant that wilts at 2pm in full sun is very often not thirsty. It is transpiring faster than its roots can resupply, and it will stand back up on its own by evening. Squash, cucumbers, hydrangeas and anything with large soft leaves do this daily in summer. Check the mix an inch down before you reach for the can. If it is damp, the answer is shade in the afternoon, not more water.
Overwatering and underwatering look almost identical
They do, and that is why so many struggling plants get watered to death by an attentive owner. Both produce wilting, yellowing and leaf drop, because both end in the same place: roots that cannot deliver water. Underwatering removes the water. Overwatering drowns the roots that would have moved it. The symptoms differ in texture and pattern.

If the plant looks bad in more than three of these rows at once, the cause is usually the pot, not the watering: no drainage hole, a saucer never emptied, or garden soil in a container.
The deciding move is always the same. Stick a finger in the mix. Damp at one inch plus a wilting plant equals overwatering, full stop. If you are still not sure, slide the plant out of the pot and look at the root ball. Healthy roots are white or cream and firm, and they hold the shape of the pot. Drowned roots are brown, soft and smell sour, and the outer layer slides off between your fingers. It takes thirty seconds and it ends the guessing. Ways to water less often
Change the system rather than trying harder. Every option below buys you days, and several can be combined on the same balcony.
- Self-watering planters and wicking reservoirs. A sealed reservoir under the mix, connected by a wick or a soil column, keeps moisture steady and typically stretches a 3 to 5 gallon planter from daily to every 5 to 10 days. Best for thirsty crops like tomatoes; poor for rosemary and lavender, which want to dry out.
- A drip kit on a timer. The most reliable fix by far. A battery timer, a length of quarter-inch line and one dripper per pot runs $30 to $80 for a small balcony and removes the chore entirely. Run it in the early morning and check emitters monthly for clogs.
- Ollas. An unglazed clay vessel buried to its neck seeps water into the mix as the surrounding soil dries. Refill every 3 to 7 days. Effective in pots of 10 gallons and up, largely pointless in small ones.
- Group pots by water need. Thirsty things together, drought-tolerant things together. Grouping also raises humidity between pots and shades their sides, which alone cuts loss noticeably.
- Mulch the surface. An inch of straw, bark fines, or even shredded leaves cuts evaporation from the top of the pot substantially and keeps the surface cooler.
- Size up the pot. Doubling the volume roughly halves the frequency. It is the cheapest intervention available, subject to your balcony's weight limit.
- Get pots out of afternoon wind. Move them against a wall or behind a screen. Wind is the invisible drain on a rooftop or a high balcony.
- Plant for the hardest spot. Rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano, lavender and sedums are content in the corner that bakes. Put the basil and lettuce where you actually walk past them.
One honest constraint. If you carry water from a kitchen tap in a can, your plant count is a chore budget, not a wish list. Budget roughly a minute per pot per trip in summer, including the walk and the refill. Fifteen pots is fifteen minutes a day in August, every day, including the days you get home at nine. Most abandoned balconies were abandoned at exactly that arithmetic. Decide the number before you buy the pots, or build the drip line first. Watering while you are away
Match the method to the length of the trip. Anything under three days needs almost nothing; anything over two weeks needs hardware or a human.
Up to three days
Water every pot deeply the morning you leave, until it runs from the drainage holes. Move the containers into shade or at least out of afternoon sun, and push them together into a tight block so they shade each other's sides and hold a pocket of humid air. Most established pots of 5 gallons and up will be fine. Small pots and fabric bags may still need the next tier even for a long weekend.
About a week
Set up wicking. Capillary matting under a group of pots with one end in a full reservoir will keep them supplied for roughly a week, as long as the pots make good contact with the mat. A rope wick works the same way for individual pots: push one end a few inches into the mix and drop the other into a jug of water set slightly higher than the pot base. Self-watering inserts and reservoir planters handle this tier easily. For small pots, a shallow tray with an inch of water works, but only for small pots and only for a few days before it stagnates.
Two weeks or more
There are two honest answers: a drip line on a battery timer, or a person. Set the timer to run early morning and test it for a full week before you leave, so you find the clogged emitter while you are still home. If you are asking a neighbor, leave written instructions with the finger test on them, because "water the plants" is usually interpreted as a splash on every surface.
What not to do: leave pots standing in deep water for a week. It is the most common improvised solution and it drowns the plant on day two, then leaves you a pot of sour mix and a mosquito nursery on day seven. A tray with one inch, refreshed, is a short-term measure. A bucket is not a holiday plan.
Watering in the cool season
Cut back sharply, and check by weight rather than by habit. As temperatures fall and days shorten, growth slows to almost nothing, evaporation drops, and the plant's water use falls with it. The interval that kept a pot perfect in July will drown the same pot in November. A container that needed water every three days in summer may go two or three weeks in winter.
Winter wet kills more container plants than winter cold. Cold-hardy perennials and shrubs in pots usually die because the mix stayed saturated through weeks of rain, the roots suffocated, and then a freeze finished a plant that was already compromised. The pot is the problem, not the thermometer.
Three habits fix it. Check less often, and always with a finger or a lift before you pour. Raise pots off the ground on feet or small risers so water leaves the drainage holes instead of sitting against a sealed patio surface. And where winter rain is relentless, move pots under an eave or against a sheltered wall, where you control the water instead of the sky. Rain shelter is also the only way to keep a dormant Mediterranean herb alive through a wet winter.
Come spring, watch for the turn. The first week of warm sun and new growth will change the interval faster than you expect, and a plant that went a fortnight in February may want water every four days by April. Go back to the finger test and recalibrate.
